Biofuels in Bunkering: What’s Changing in 2025

The global shipping industry is entering a new phase in 2025, and biofuels are at the heart of it.

With the Fuel EU Maritime regulation now in force and the EU ETS expanding, shipowners are looking for cleaner fuels that are ready to use. Biofuels like FAME and HVO offer that flexibility. They can be blended with marine gas oil and used in most engines without big technical changes.

In key ports like Singapore and Rotterdam, demand for bio-blended fuels is rising fast. B24 and B30 blends are now commonly available, and over 60 ports worldwide have seen biofuel bunkering activity since 2015.

Biofuels help reduce emissions not just on paper but in practice. When certified for sustainability, they can lower a vessel’s well-to-wake GHG intensity, cut carbon costs under the EU ETS, and improve CII ratings. That’s why many cargo owners are also getting involved, asking for greener shipping options and even paying a premium for reduced Scope 3 emissions.

Challenges remain, like feedstock limits, price premiums, and infrastructure for higher blends but the direction is clear: biofuels are no longer an experiment. They’re a working solution.

At Aqualis Marine, we continue to support owners and operators with reliable access to bio-blended fuels across Asia-Pacific. For those looking to stay compliant and competitive, the time to act is now.
